Oktoberfest is a traditional German fall festival that typically includes good food, lively music, and, of course, beer. These community events are ideal for our organization to attend, so we can encourage guests to Make the Call for a sober ride home and to educate people of all ages about the risks of impaired driving.
No DUI Larimer is a nonprofit organization with a mission to prevent impaired driving and promote safe alternatives through education and community engagement. We are committed to creating a community where everyone can enjoy festivities like Oktoberfest without endangering themselves or others due to alcohol- or marijuana-related incidents.
Each time we attend an event, we bring along informative brochures, tear-away information sheets, fun freebies, and a packet full of statistics and information about Colorado laws, so we can attempt to answer the many questions we receive from the public. Our committee members provide guidance on making responsible choices, but we also take the time to listen to what the public has to say – whether it’s feedback about our organization or a personal story.
Our goal at these events is to create a platform for open discussions, where guests can learn about the potential consequences of impaired driving and the positive impact of responsible behavior.
We had the privilege of speaking with people of all ages at this weekend’s event, and appreciated those of you who shared your DUI stories and tips with us. Here are some that stuck with us the most:
“A month ago, Labor Day weekend, I got a DUI. I’d been arguing over custody with my ex-wife, so it had been a hard day. I had been drinking. I thought, ‘I’m going to have to sell my car to pay for this.’ So I decided to take it for one last ride. Someone saw me and called the sheriff. I’m so grateful to that person who called and kept me from hurting myself or someone else. I wish I could thank them – write them a letter or something. I’ve decided I’m going to make this the best thing that’s ever happened to me. It’s a good thing, what you’re doing – an important thing.”
______
“I’ve always followed the 0013 Rule that they taught us in basic training:
- 0 underage drinking
- 0 drinking and driving
- 1 drink per hour
- No more than 3 drinks in one sitting
And I have never gotten in trouble!”
_______
“I grew up when DUIs were a slap on the wrist. But when I was young working as a journalist, I was covering an accident and it involved my neighbor. A drunk driver T-boned her, and when they pulled her out of the car, it was just….destroyed. She was destroyed, the car was destroyed. That’s never left my mind, and I’ve never driven after a drink. Not even one.”
We believe by participating in events like Oktoberfest and establishing a strong presence in the community, No DUI Larimer demonstrates our commitment to fostering a safer environment in northern Colorado. Collaborations with local events and organizations showcase our collective efforts aimed at reducing incidents of impaired driving and promoting responsible alcohol consumption.
Impaired driving is an issue that affects every one of us in Larimer County. When in doubt, remember: If you FEEL different, you DRIVE different.
Prost – to responsible celebrations and a safer community!
